Redevelopment vision Kanaalzone Eindhoven
The municipality of Eindhoven has long been aware of the need for an urban vision regarding the ‘Kanaalzone’. The plan presents a well-thought of, detailed background, describing the area’s industrial history and its growing interplay with residential functions and requirements.
Though ultimately foreseeing the removal of heavy industries and their replacement by small-scale interventions, the vision relies on close cooperation with neighboring communities, who oppose the infringement of anything non-residential within their boundaries, and commercial partners, many of whom are reluctant to accept changes that might harm their profitability, such as access routes, parking and environmental standards. The result is an apprehensive, somewhat overconsiderate policy with two new traffic-related suggestions: closing a service road (in effect from 2011) and adding a bridge (in debate).
